The Making of a Landmark

Groundbreaking on the Landmark began in 1927 and a mission was set to create Syracuse’s largest theatre, with 3,000 seats and an eight-story office tower and it was born as Marcus Loew’s State Theatre. When it opened in February of 1928 it was advertised as “the last word in theatrical ornateness and luxuriousness.” With rich decorations including a chandelier designed for Cornelius Vanderbilt’s mansion, and wall ornaments sprinkled along the elegant red and gold walls, the theater was a scene for luxury. For years, the theater was a successful staple in the Syracuse area.

In 1954, the theater’s organ broke – a 1,400-pipe Wurlitzer thing of beauty. Then, in 1967, the parent corporation of Loew’s State Theater announced its closing and the probable demolition of the theater. Despite efforts from city officials and community members, the theater officially closed in June of 1975. But, in early July, the Syracuse Area Landmark Theatre was established as the nonprofit agency to acquire the property and preserve what was left.

In the 1970s, the desire to save the theatre spread throughout the community. Volunteers and donors flocked together and with the community behind, the Landmark Theatre opened and hosted a number of iconic performers like Tony Bennet, Harry Belafonte, and Bob Dylan.

“This theater is the best around this area because of the artsy/independent movies they play and the ambiance.”
