This autumn from September 28 – October 29, Amtrak’s Great Dome Car offers a unique way to travel on the Adirondack line between Albany and Montréal. The dome car has traveled the country, making its way onto the most scenic lines in America. With windows on all sides and a clear ceiling, this vintage car offers panoramic views of the changing foliage.
Aboard the Great Dome Car, passengers can witness the changing landscape, autumn skies, and the most incredible wildlife. Hawks, bald eagles, and many other members of the avian family are all in clear sight due to the open roof.
Catch picturesque views as the train moves further north, following cliffsides and bordering the magnificent Lake Champlain and St. Lawrence River. Not to mention passengers will get to experience one of the largest mountain ranges in eastern America, the Adirondacks.
TRAILS AND RAILS
Gazing at the passing scenery is one of the pleasures of train travel, but passengers often wonder what it is they’re seeing.
For the past 17 years, to provide an even richer experience on the Great Dome Car, volunteers from the National Park Service’s Trails & Rails program are aboard select trips to offer commentary on the passing scenery.
Joe Lalumia, who coordinates the 45 Trails & Rails volunteers for the Adirondack and Maple Leaf lines, says there are at least two volunteers on each trip. Volunteers are there to share information on geographical points of interest, history, nature, and wildlife—as well as the train itself.
Learn about the state’s capitol and the many political figures associated with the region. Passing through Schnectady, experience the Erie Canal, the “bond between the Atlantic and the Western States.” Journey back in time with stories of wilderness and warfare that shaped the landscape you’re traveling. Or, let the views speak for themselves—especially as the train circles along the narrow cliffs on the northern end.
ABOUT THE GREAT DOME CAR
Officially known as Car No. 10031, the Great Dome Car is the only remaining one of its kind in Amtrak’s service. Built in 1955 by the Budd Company for Great Northern Railway, it was originally numbered 1391 and named Ocean View. Nearly 20 years later, Amtrak took ownership of the car in 1971, renumbering it 9361.
Following extensive renovations in 1985, and renumbering the car, it began daily service on Amtrak’s Auto Train through 1994. After further refurbishing in 1999, the car went through renumbering again to 10031. Since then, the Great Dome Car has been used in various Amtrak services across the country, including the Pacific Surfliner, several charters and excursions. Most recently, The Great Dome Car was in Maine traveling aboard Amtrak’s Downeaster service.
