The Tailor and the Cook

The Tailor and the Cook is a tough reservation to land for valid reasons: It's great, straight-from-the-farm food just a few feet from Utica's Union Station. Seriously, what's not to love.

The Tailor and the Cook

Located at the center of Utica at 311 Main St., The Tailor and the Cook is a delicious and wonderful homage to this city. Created by childhood friends Chris Talgo and Tim Hardiman, this duo wanted to collaborate their passion for food along with providing sustainable dishes to the public.

The Tailor and the Cook uses only local ingredients from neighboring farms to provide the best possible dishes. Taking straight from the farm to the kitchen, the restaurant prides on using sustainable food that enhances the environment and health of Utica.

History of the Restaurant

Tailor & The Cook recently moved to 311 Main St., the historic building that used to home Utica’s beloved Children’s Museum. This new location features a considerably larger restaurant with an expanded bar area with casual dining.

Founded in 2012, Tailor and the Cook has always been rooted in providing great local food with a wonderful experience to work with and improve the community around it. Friends and founders Tim and Mellisa Hardiman and Chris and Tracey Talgo worked to build a space that was comforting and inviting.

The name itself is a homage to the restaurant’s beginnings at 94 Genesee Street in Baggs Square West. The old address was home to a number of business including the UTK Tailoring Company from 1910 until the 1940s.

The restaurant was recently named for OpenTable’s “Diners’ Choice Award,” and also was named one of the “Top 100 Best Restaurants” in 2014 by OpenTable, along with many other awards.

Notable Dishes

With extensive menus for dinner, brunch, after dinner, and drinks – there is something fro everyone. Dishes change throughout each season, but some of their spring dinner offerings include the Grilled Filet Mignon with scallion mashed potatoes, a smoked half chicek with red cabbage and lentils, or a duck leg confit with prosciutto and split peas. All the dishes are from local farms and businesses such as Utica Bread, Bach Farms in Mohawk, and Champlain Valley, Milling. You can check out where they get all of their ingredients from right on the other side of the menu!

Do not miss out on The Tailor and the Cook for an amazing experience!

“We had friends fly in from California and wanted to have them experience a great meal with a fantastic vibe. Some of our friends highly recommended this place, and we were definitely not disappointed. From the attentive, friendly staff; the wine list and the best part, the delicious food. Each meal was both eclectic and delicious.”
