Just 90 miles north of New York City, visitors can take part in “The River Run” and ride the railroad tracks right alongside Esopus Creek from the village of Phoenicia. Riders have the opportunity to discover the picturesque woods of the Catskill Mountains.

So, what is a Rail Explorer? Rail Explorers are pedal-powered bikes that ride directly on railroad tracks, dating back to the 1850s when maintenance workers used similar vehicles on the tracks. With four steel wheels, it’s easy to pedal along the tracks for a relaxing and enjoyable ride through the woods. Riders can relish in a hands-free experience without needing to steer, making the tour photograph-friendly for the beautiful sights. The company has taken certain measures to ensure the safety of all riders and the best adventure. Trained guides lead the tours at the front and back of every group in addition to keeping all bikes 500 feet apart, allowing guests to ride at their own pace. The Rail Explorers Catskill division is an eight-mile trip with electric pedals, so guests must allow 2.5 hours for each tour. Bikers have the option of a two-person or four-person vehicle. The Tandem Explorer, which allows two riders at a time, costs $42.50 a person, totaling to $85 to fill the bike. The Quad Explorer, otherwise known as the “Cadillac” of their bikes, holds up to 4 riders. This explorer costs $37.50 a person, adding up to $150 for the entire bike.
