    What is NYC Pride?

Every June, New York City becomes a little bit more colorful with tons of celebrations for Pride Month—a month dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ community. The Pride March is NYC’s landmark event. Each year, the march, which started as a demonstration to  honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, has blossomed into a powerful symbol of LGBTQIA+ resilience and activism.

People march in a New York City Pride Parade holding a large red and purple banner reading “Heritage of Pride: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender.” Colorful rainbow balloons arch above the proud group as they walk down a city street.

What to Expect at NYC Pride

While the Pride March is the signature event, celebrations happen all month long to highlight Pride Month.

    Pride March

Millions of spectators come out to join in on the iconic Pride March. The march starts on 26th St & 5th Ave and continues on to 15th St and 7th Ave. Rainbow colors decorate the streets and its attendees. The community, allies, marching contingents, Grand Marshals, nonprofits, sponsors, activists and more join the march.

This year’s Grand Marshals include four incredible activists within the LGBTQIA+ community: Karine Jean-Pierre (the first Black and openly queer press secretary), Marti Gould Cummings (the first non-binary candidate to run for public office in NYC), DJ Lina (advocate for Black trans women) and Elisa Crespo (first trans woman of color to run for public office in The Bronx). They’ll also be joined by Trans formative Schools (a groundbreaking team of trans and queer teachers for inclusive education).

    This Year's Theme

Each year the NYC Pride March adopts a theme to embody their activism. This year’s theme is “Rise Up: Pride in Protest.” The theme was selected to honor the very first Pride March that took place in 1970, one year after the Stonewall Riots—a pivotal point in LGBTQIA+ history.

A diverse, energetic crowd waves rainbow flags and cheers behind a blue barrier at an outdoor Pride parade on a sunny day, celebrating LGBTQ+ pride and unity on a city street lined with brick buildings and trees.
