The Otesaga opened in 1909 after the Clark family commissioned architect Percy Griffin to design a grand lakeside resort. Its Federalist-inspired architecture features a prominent front portico with 30-foot columns, and the hotel has remained a fixture of Cooperstown for more than a century.
The resort has long been connected to Cooperstown’s baseball history, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual induction weekend. The Otesaga joined Historic Hotels of America in 1994 and continues to preserve its historic character while adding modern amenities.
Guests can spend the day exploring the resort or venturing into Cooperstown. On the property, activities include kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing, tennis, pickleball and swimming in the heated outdoor pool. The resort also offers bicycle rentals and a fitness center.
Golfers can play the historic Leatherstocking Golf Course, which opened alongside The Otesaga in 1909 as a nine-hole course before being expanded to 18 holes in 1919 by golf architect Devereux Emmet. The course features views of Otsego Lake and is open to the public.
The Otesaga also offers a variety of dining options, including Hawkeye Bar & Grill, 1909, Glimmerglass, Fire Bar, Mohican Market and Leatherstocking Golf Bar & Grill.
The resort offers a daily historical tour at 11 a.m. in the main lobby, where guests can learn about The Otesaga’s history. Guided art tours are also offered Mondays and Fridays at 2 p.m. The schedule of activities and amenities can vary by season.
There is no Amtrak station in Cooperstown. Travelers can take Amtrak to Utica Station, which is approximately a one-hour drive from Cooperstown, or Albany-Rensselaer Station, approximately an hour and a half away. From either station, visitors will need to arrange ground transportation or rent a car for the remainder of the trip.
Amtrak also operates connecting Thruway bus service in partnership with Trailways of New York, including service connecting Amtrak’s Utica station with destinations such as Cooperstown. Check Amtrak’s current trip-planning options when booking, as connecting service and schedules can change.
