The Silo

A 19th century train car and an old coal Silo make the perfect restaurant for sampling American classics and new concoctions.

Established inside a repurposed coal silo with more than 40 flavors of ice cream served in “The Caboose,” a 19th-century repurposed train car, The Silo offers a singular culinary experience. The Silo is known for its “Footlong Haystack,” a 12-inch hoagie loaded with rib-eye steak, mozzarella, and toasted hash browns – a culinary feat featured on the Travel Channel’s Man V. Food. If you want a sweet challenge, try the “Sand Dock Sundae” – 10 scoops of your favorite ice cream flavor, crushed Oreos, fudge, gummy worms, and more served inside, as the name should suggest, a bucket with a shovel for a spoon! The frosting on this cake of a dining experience is the nearby Niagara River, which offers sweeping views as you dine.

If you’re not up for a challenge while you eat, don’t fear – the menu is full of American classics. With creative twists on gourmet sandwiches, salads, burgers with grass-fed beef, and more. To make things better, ingredients are sourced locally and delivered fresh daily from local farms and trusted partners.

A Rich History

Way back in the 1930s, the area around the silo was referred to as the “Hojack Country.” The Lewiston Silo was home to coal that fueled the Great Gorge Railway. But when it stopped in 1938, the silo sat basically abandoned until 1997 when Richard Hastings had the idea to convert the old silo into a refreshment stand. In 1998, “The Silo Restaurant” opened its doors under the management of Hastings’s son Alan. Alan set forth to create a “green” restaurant, he recycled church pews for tables and seats,  used plant-based cups, lids, and utensils, and used the grease from the fryers to power gas-free cars. In 2010, Alan Hastings found an old train caboose dating back to 1890 and decided he could recycle, and preserve this piece of history and created The Silo’s Ice Cream Caboose.
