    What is the Pierre Hotel?

Since 1930, the Pierre has hosted icons of the art, fashion and entertainment worlds. With the end of Prohibition, The Pierre quickly became a place to gather for young bohemian aristocrats, socialites, poets and musicians, who would become the tastemakers of the 1930’s.

In 1932, the Georgian Room was opened as an Art Deco supper club, establishing The Pierre as a destination for big band entertainment for decades to come.
John Paul Getty, the founder of Getty Oil, purchased the hotel in 1938, and by the 1950’s, the hotel had become a favorite stomping ground for Hollywood elite in New York City. Audrey Hepburn was a frequent guest and celebrated her 1954 Academy Award win for Roman Holiday at the hotel. In 1959, Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, Eddie Fisher, bought an apartment there.

The hotel’s iconic murals were commissioned under the ownership of Peter Dowling, who owned The Carlyle Hotel. Dowling took over The Pierre in 1967. Much of the hotel’s current elegant aesthetic derives from Dowling’s desire to transform the space.

By the end of the 1970’s, The Pierre had become an important destination within the fashion world, with Valentino frequently holding couture shows at the hotel. Karl Lagerfeld famously quipped, “I discovered New York from The Pierre.”

Throughout the 80’s, the hotel continued to be a popular haunt for celebrities and innovators such as Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Andy Warhol and Liza Minnelli. In 1981, the hotel was officially designated as an historic landmark.

An ornate, light-filled dining room at the Pierre Hotel in NYC features high ceilings, marble columns, opulent chandeliers, and lush classical garden scenes. Elegant tables are arranged neatly, with a central table set for tea.
