    What is the Maritime Hotel?

Anchored on Ninth Avenue, The Maritime Hotel is just steps away from iconic attractions like Chelsea Market and the High Line. Originally built in 1968 as the headquarters for the National Maritime Union, the building’s facade is dotted with distinctive porthole windows, adding to the hotel’s current nautical aesthetic. Designed by modernist architect Albert Ledner, an apprentice of the famed Frank Lloyd Wright, the building’s playful exterior was initially criticized for its so-called gaudiness, but has since come to be appreciated in a new light. Since its opening in 2003, this mid-century landmark has been reimagined as a classy, upscale hotel, with modern amenities and a nostalgic feel.

The Maritime offers a prime location in one of Manhattan’s most desirable neighborhoods. Whether you’re exploring the art galleries of Chelsea, taking a stroll along the elevated High Line, or grabbing a bite at one of Chelsea Market’s delicious eateries, staying at the Maritime means that everything you need is right outside your door.

The spacious Maritime Hotel lobby features a wooden ceiling and walls, a long patterned carpet, vintage furniture, large lamps, lush plants, and a welcoming reception desk with warm lighting and decorative art on the walls.

What to Expect at The Maritime Hotel

With its signature porthole windows and wood-paneled walls, this 126 room hotel features a retro, space-age design that evokes the feel of a luxury ocean liner. Each room has its own porthole, allowing for stunning views of the city. The rooms feature a queen or king-sized bed with luxurious linens, wood accents and navy-blue furnishings. Each bathroom has a relaxing rainshower and is stocked with C.O. Bigelow bath products.

Beneath the hotel is Tao Downtown, the hotel’s restaurant that serves Pan-Asian cuisine. The restaurant’s mystical design features a giant Quan Yin Buddha perched atop a koi pond. After dinner, venture over to the hotel’s lounge, which functions as a cozy library, stocked with thousands of volumes of books. Curl up next to the fireplace before retreating to your room for the night.
