Overnight in Hudson

What do The Lumineers, artist Frederic Church and the former bass player for the band Hole have in common? It’s the City of Hudson, of course. Step off the train in this community with a rich whaling history from the 1700s and 1800s and a station with a dynamic history sits just a few steps away. Built for the New York Central Railroad in 1874, the station served as a backdrop for a Lumineers photo shoot for the band’s 2022 record, “BRIGHTSIDE.”

Olana State Historic Site

Next, you can stretch your legs at nearby Henry Hudson Riverfront Park. Then take a nine-minute Uber or Lyft ride to Olana State Historic Site. Perched atop a long slope with commanding views of the Hudson Valley, Olana was the home and studio of the late painter Frederic Church, of the Hudson River School Of Art. Encompassing 250 acres with five miles of carriage roads, Olana is open year-round with free admission.

Park Theater Hudson, Hudson Hall at the historic Hudson Opera House and Basilica Hudson anchor Hudson’s cultural and creative identities. Melissa Auf der Maur, who played bass in the band Hole, is a co-founder and board member at Basilica Hudson. This destination occupies a reclaimed 1880s industrial factory and hosts a range of arts programs.

As the day winds down, head to Wm. Farmer and Sons, a threeminute walk from the Amtrak station, for culinary offerings that include Appalachian onion soup and Hudson Valley duck Monte Cristo. Wm.
