SENIORS

10% discount on most rail fares on most Amtrak trains for travelers 65 years of age and older. A valid government-issued ID may be requested as proof of age.

CHILDREN

Take the kids on an adventure of a lifetime—and save. All children, ages 2 to 12, may travel at 50% off the adult fare on most Amtrak routes. One infant under the age of two may ride free on the lap of each passenger paying an adult fare. Children and infants must be accompanied by at least one adult (18+) in the same reservation.

MILITARY

Active-duty military personnel, their spouses and their dependents receive a 10% discount on the lowest available fare on most Amtrak trains. A valid active-duty US Armed Forces ID is required. Military personnel in uniform may proceed to the front of the ticket line. Military veterans also save 10% of the lowest available fare on most Amtrak trains.

GROUPS

Passengers traveling together in groups of 15 or more are eligible for a group discount or a free escort ticket for each group of 20 travelers. Visit amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-1GRP.

RAIL PASSENGERS ASSOCIATION

Members receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. Reservations must be made at least three days in advance. Children 2 through 12 years old ride half-price every day. Infants under 2 ride free.

Make memories and save money when you take the kids on a journey they’ll never forget. They’ll experience the wonder of the train, while you enjoy a trip without baggage fees or traffic.

One child ages 2 – 12 is eligible to receive a 50% discount on the lowest available adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains with each fare-paying adult (age 18+). If any additional child per adult will be traveling, reservations must be made for that child as an “Adult” and the full adult fare will be charged.

Infants Ride Free

One child under the age of two, not occupying a seat, may ride free with each fare-paying adult (age 18+). Additional infants can be booked as a “Child” and receive the 50% discount (if available) or as an “Adult” (if the Children’s fare is not available).

Discount Restrictions

  • Passengers 12 years of age and younger must travel with an adult passenger who is at least 18 years old.

Unaccompanied Minors

  • Children age 12 and under may not travel unaccompanied. They must travel with another person who is at least 18 years old.*
  • Children 13, 14 and 15 years old may travel as unaccompanied minors only under certain conditions.
  • Reservations for unaccompanied minors cannot be made on Amtrak.com.
  • Additional rules and restrictions apply.

*Exception: A minor who is 16 or 17, who is a parent to children of any age, may bring those children without restriction. The 16- or 17-year-old must bring proof that he or she is the parent of the children.

Senior Amtrak travelers can save 10% on most trains.

Amtrak travelers 65 years of age and over are eligible to receive a 10% discount on most rail fares on most Amtrak trains. On cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, a 10% Senior discount is applicable to travelers aged 60 and over.

With valid active-duty United States Armed Forces identification cards, active-duty US military personnel, their spouses and their dependents are eligible to receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains, including for travel on the Auto Train. Just use the Fare Finder at the beginning of your search and select ‘Military’ for each passenger as appropriate to receive the discount.

Veterans of all branches of the US military save 10%

Veterans of the United States Military receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. Veterans must have served in one of the following branches:

  • Army
  • Marine Corps
  • Navy
  • Air Force
  • Coast Guard
  • NOAA Corps*
  • U.S. Public Health Service*
  • U.S. Merchant Marine*

Amtrak offers a 10% rail fare discount to adult passengers with a disability. Child passengers with a disability are eligible for the everyday 50% child discount plus an additional 10% off the discounted child’s fare, regardless of the service on which they travel.

Amtrak also offers a 10% discount for persons traveling with a passenger with a disability as a companion. Those designated as a companion must be capable of providing the necessary assistance to the passenger with a disability.

Just select ‘Passenger with Disability’ or ‘Companion’ for each passenger as appropriate in Fare Finder at the beginning of your search and to receive the applicable discounts.

You must provide written documentation of your disability at the ticket counter and when boarding the train. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • Transit system ID card for persons with a disability
  • Membership card from a disability organization
  • Letter from a physician
  • Medicare card, if under 65
  • Veteran’s Administration ID with “Service Connected”
  • Disabled/Accessible parking placard issued by a state Department of Motor Vehicle (photocopy is acceptable).

Rail Passengers Association (RPA) members are eligible to receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. Visit the Rail Passengers Association web site for information about becoming a member.

Three-Day Advance Purchase

To use the Rail Passengers Association discount, you must book your tickets (including tickets for travel on unreserved trains) at least three days in advance of travel.

If you make any change to your itinerary, you must re-qualify for any membership discount used. This means that, to be eligible to receive an applicable membership discount, any change to your itinerary must be made at least three days in advance of travel.

Membership Card Required

You must present your current, valid Rail Passengers Association membership card at the time your tickets are issued. Conductors may ask to see your membership card during your trip. Please carry your card with you onboard. Members with “Family” membership cards must each carry their own card with them.

How to Enter Your Rail Passengers Association Membership Discount Number When Booking Online

To take advantage of this discount when booking your travel online:

  • Use the Fare Finder at the beginning of your search and select ‘Rail Passengers Association’ for each passenger as appropriate. Then, enter your membership number on the ‘Passenger Information’ page of the booking process.
  • Or, in your user profile, select ‘Rail Passengers Association’ in the ‘Travel Profile’ section, and enter your membership number. Rail Passengers Association will be pre-selected as your preferred passenger discount type, and your membership number will appear, already filled-in, in the appropriate text field.
  • When entering your membership number, omit any spaces and dashes.

Sharing your train trip with a group of 15 or more? Discounts are waiting for you

Passengers traveling together in groups of 15 or more may be eligible to receive a discount off the normal rail fare, or a free escort ticket for every 15 travelers. Learn more about group travel requests here or call 1-800-USA-1GRP for more information on taking everyone along to share the fun.

Make reservation requests for your group as early as possible for the best fares and accommodations.

Discounts

Groups may be eligible to receive discounts for each 15 paying passengers. The half-fare children’s discounts may be applied to eligible members of the group. Discounts are not valid on all trains. These discount options are offered at the discretion of Amtrak.

Riding the Train

Seating and Sleeping Accommodations

We offer coach seating on all trains, and, on long-distance trains, a variety of sleeping accommodations.

Meal Choices

We also offer a varied menu with choices ranging from light snacks and sandwiches to full meals in our long-distance dining cars. A variety of beverages and non-alcoholic beverages are also available, including a full bar selection on some trains.

Pre-boarding and Exclusive Occupancy

We can pre-board your group to add ease and comfort to the boarding process. We offer group seating and exclusive occupancy if your group is large enough to occupy an entire car.

Group Leader and Chaperone Policy

We want you and your group to have fun and be safe. Please review these rules with the adult chaperones in your group and provide each of them with a copy of these guidelines.

Chaperones

A minimum of one designated chaperone is required for every six minors under the age of 18 aboard the train. Designated chaperones are adults specifically responsible and accountable for minors traveling on the train. Any adult traveling in connection with the group who is responsible for an infant will not be considered a designated chaperone. Chaperones are responsible for following all Group Leader and Chaperone Guidelines.

Station Arrival

Please call 1-800-USA-RAIL prior to leaving for the train station to make sure your train is on schedule.

Plan to arrive at the train station at least 60 minutes before your scheduled train departure. Your group will need to be ready to board as soon as the train pulls into the station. Some station stops are as little as two minutes. The trains cannot wait for late-arriving groups or individuals.

  • Present your ticket to the station staff or conductor.
  • At staffed stations, identify yourself to the station staff to confirm boarding instructions.
  • Identify your group to the conductor and follow his/her seating instructions. During your trip, feel free to contact onboard personnel for assistance.
  • Group leaders and designated chaperones are responsible for the conduct and supervision of their group at all times during the field trip.
  • Please remind your students to be considerate of the other passengers. Amtrak personnel cannot assist in the supervision of your group.
  • Please use the trash and recycle bins and keep the area around your group clean and free of debris. Amtrak staff will provide extra trash bags for you to pick up your area before your group arrives at your destination.
  • When your group exits the train, follow the conductor’s instructions.
  • Appoint one or two people to follow behind the group to check the seating areas and overhead bins for any items that may have been left behind.
