New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Buffalo, NY

The city in Western New York welcomes in the New Year with the annual ball drop and fireworks show.

From 10 pm to midnight on Saturday, December 31, 2023, residents and visitors of Buffalo will gather in Roosevelt Plaza in downtown Buffalo to celebrate the New Year. 2023-24 marks the 36th annual New Years’s Eve Celebration.

ROOSEVELT PLAZA IN DOWNTOWN BUFFALO

The fun is centered around the Electric Tower in Roosevelt Plaza. Built in 1912, this Beaux Arts-style 14-story skyscraper was designed by Esenwein and Johnson and Edward B. Green. Inspired by the landmark centerpiece of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition and the Pharos Lighthouse that was a wonder of the ancient world in Egypt, the tower became the tallest building in Buffalo upon its completion. The building originally was home to the Buffalo General Electric Company after which it was named, and was expanded with seven-story additions to the east and northeast of the original building in 1924-1927, designed by Edward B. Green and Sons, and a three-story addition to the roof of the building’s original east wing. The building was renovated in the 1930s, adding several Art Deco elements to the building’s interior. The building today is regularly lit up with various colored lights to commemorate special events.

WINTER FUN IN BUFFALO

Canalside, the revitalized waterfront area in Buffalo, located at the terminus of the Erie Canal, bustles all year round with activities, restaurants and other attractions. In the winter, you can ice skate at the popular 35,000-square foot ice rink, which is open Wednesday through Sunday.  If you don’t skate, don’t worry: you can try an Ice Bike, which allows you to steer your way around the rink in a more stable fashion. Also popular on the ice is curling, the team sports where players slide stones made of granite toward a target.
