The Devil’s Hole Area overlooks the powerful Devil’s Hole Rapids and offers scenic views of the Niagara River Gorge. A stone staircase leads down toward the gorge and connects visitors with the Devil’s Hole Trail, where dramatic rock formations and rushing water create an unforgettable hiking experience.
The area is also a popular destination for fishing, hiking, picnicking and photography, making it an easy addition to a day exploring Niagara Falls.
Devil’s Hole is part of the larger Niagara Gorge Trail System, which connects several state parks along the Niagara River. The Devil’s Hole Trail is approximately 1.5 miles and is rated moderate, with steep sections and stairs leading into the gorge.
For visitors looking for more mileage, the surrounding trail system provides connections toward Whirlpool State Park, DeVeaux Woods State Park and Artpark State Park.
One of the highlights of Devil’s Hole is getting close to the Niagara River away from the crowds surrounding the Falls themselves. From the overlooks, visitors can watch the river rush through the gorge and take in the layers of rock carved by the Niagara River over thousands of years.
The area is also part of the Niagara Shoreline Trail and connects with the Empire State Trail network.
Devil’s Hole is a free, year-round day-use area with parking, picnic areas, scenic overlooks and hiking access. Restrooms are available seasonally, generally from mid-April through late October.
Because the gorge trails can be steep and rugged, visitors should wear sturdy footwear and check current trail conditions before heading down into the gorge. New York State Parks posts updates when portions of the trail are closed because of rockfall, maintenance or other safety concerns.

Experience Devil’s Hole State Park via Amtrak to Niagara Falls, N.Y. From the Amtrak station, visitors can arrange ground transportation to the park along the Niagara Scenic Parkway.
