There’s something so fun about hopping on a train for a spontaneous day trip, and our recent adventure to
Poughkeepsie was exactly that. We took Amtrak into town and spent the entire day exploring Main Street
and the waterfront completely by foot. From amazing food to gorgeous Hudson River views, the day
ended up being packed with way more than we expected.
As soon as we got off the train, we wandered around the station for a bit and spotted the New York By
Rail magazine. After flipping through it, we immediately started making a mental list of places we wanted
to check out. It honestly felt like the perfect guide for a day in town.
Our first stop was The Poughkeepsie Grind for coffee and pastries. We ordered an almond croissant, a
chocolate croissant and an affogato, and everything was incredible. The croissants were perfectly flaky
and fresh, and the staff was so welcoming. It was the ideal way to start the morning before all the walking
ahead of us.
After breakfast, we headed down to the Waryas Park Promenade along the Hudson River. The weather
was beautiful, and there were seagulls everywhere flying over the water. From the promenade, we could
see both bridges stretching across the Hudson, which made the views even more impressive. There are
docks that extend out onto the river, a playground and a surprisingly massive skate park that we spent a
while checking out. We also passed by the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum, which is designed for kids
ages 0–12 and looked like such a fun stop for families.
Eventually, we made our way to the elevator leading up to the Walkway Over the Hudson. The views
from up there are absolutely gorgeous. You can see the river for miles, and there’s so much to look at
while walking across. The walkway itself is full of interesting signs and little details that make the
experience even better. There were people biking, walking their dogs and just enjoying the scenery.
While walking the trail, we decided to stop for lunch at Lola’s Cafe, which is located right off the
walkway. We split a turkey club sandwich and homemade iced tea, and both were delicious. We even
grabbed the cutest little window seat, which made it feel extra cozy after being outside all morning.
We spent another hour exploring the walkway before heading back down toward Main Street. On the way,
we couldn’t resist stopping at Emiliano’s Pizza. We had heard that the soup is made fresh every day by the
owner’s mother, so naturally we had to try it. The pasta fagioli completely lived up to the hype, and the
plain slice of pizza was equally amazing. You can definitely tell why the place has such a great reputation.
By this point, it was officially happy hour, and Main Street has no shortage of fun spots to grab a drink.
We ended up at Schatzi’s Pub & Bier Garden, where we ordered a dragon fruit margarita and the Sweet
Angel Baby sangria. The outdoor area was super cute, and the skunk-themed decor throughout the bar
made the whole place feel quirky and memorable.
After drinks, we continued farther up Main Street toward the ice rink and the historic Bardavon 1869
Opera House. The rink hosts free skate nights on Fridays and even Marist Red Foxes hockey games,
which is such a cool addition to downtown. The Bardavon itself is stunning. It’s a massive opera house
with beautiful architecture and constantly hosts concerts, performances and events throughout the year.
At the very end of Main Street, we stopped into Goodnight Kenny for another cocktail. The bartender was
incredibly kind, and my friend even made a postcard to hang on the wall while we were there. It felt like
one of those places with a really fun local atmosphere.
Just a two-minute walk away was Darkside Records, which might have been one of my favorite stops of
the day. The record selection was huge, and my friend and I became completely obsessed with their
Smiski collection. We’ve been trying to find one forever, so finally spotting them there felt like a huge
win. While we were shopping, we also heard they’re opening a brewery and bar inside the store, and we
could actually see them setting everything up.
As we slowly made our way back toward the train station, we stopped at Zeus Brewing Company for a
quick bite and another drink. We shared bruschetta and a beer flight, and we also learned that their rooftop
opens in May, which sounds perfect for summer evenings.
Right across the street, we wandered into the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, where they regularly feature
art exhibitions and events. It was such a nice surprise and added even more character to the day.
Before heading back to the station, we realized we still had a little time left, so naturally we squeezed in
one final stop at The Governess. We ordered espresso martinis and spicy crab crispy rice bites while
watching the sunset over the water. It honestly couldn’t have been a more perfect ending to the trip.
Thankfully, the restaurant is only steps away from the train station, so once we finished, we hopped back
on Amtrak and headed home to the city. The ride was comfortable, the Wi-Fi made the trip fly by and we
were already talking about coming back before we even left the station.
