Explore FDR’s Home and Retreat

Visitors can take a ranger-guided tour of FDR’s home, a self-guided tour of the museum and stroll through the grounds, gardens, and trails of this 300-acre site. Tours begin at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor and Education Center where an introductory film is played and arrangements for self-guided tours of the presidential library and museum can be made.

The Springwood Estate’s hour-long tour takes visitors through the Roosevelt mansion. On display are Roosevelt’s personal items, including his 14,000 volume library, 2,000 naval paintings, prints and lithographs, 300 bird specimens, 200 ship models and 1.2 million stamps. Visitors may also tour Top Cottage retreat, Roosevelt’s relaxation cottage built in 1938.

Established as a National Historic Site in 1945, the property is open to the public year-round, seven days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day, including the grounds and buildings).

“This is an exceptional learning experience for young people and adults alike. The atmosphere is stunning since everything is close to original, if not actually original of the FDR period.”
