A popular, public park in the Meatpacking District of New York City, the High Line runs 1.45 miles on top of a former freight train line. The elevated park’s innovative design connects visitors with places to eat, shop, and enjoy nature while engaging the diverse community that surrounds it. Friends of the High Line, a non-profit organization committed to maintaining the High Line and operating its programs, raises 98% of the park’s budget.
Things to Do
The High Line offers a variety of walkways and overlooks to give people views of the historic Meatpacking district. Visitors get a unique experience of New York City when they tour the one-of-a-kind park. Children can safely explore the original framework of the freight train line at the Pershing Square Beams. Nature-lovers can stroll through a miniature forest at the Chelsea Thicket and see over 200 species of plants. Food enthusiasts can delve into the neighborhood’s culinary history at Satina. High Line Art presents a variety of site-specific commissioned art as well as exhibits from local artists. Weekly morning Tai Chi and meditation sessions are also offered in the park for a quiet, peaceful experience of High Line.
Events at the High Line
The Make It! Festival series invites families to explore nature with High Line Gardeners and experience a range of themes from storytellers. Live! explores the vast array of styles of art and culture New York has to offer through a series of live performances and activities, ranging from Latin-inspired dance parties to poetry festivals. Starting in December and running through April, the High Line is presenting their winter tour: from Freight to Flowers. The tour is given by High Line Docents, volunteers that grant guests an insider’s perspective on the history, infrastructure, landscape, and recent renewal of the park.
